Want to know more about me?
Geesh, where do I start? Well, I was adopted when I was only 7 months old. My biological mother and my adoptive mother were friends (although my adoptive mother was much older and was more of a mentor to her at times). When my biological mother announced that she wanted to give me up, her friend quickly offered to take me and raise me as her own. As the years went by, I struggled to find my identity in an all White family – being biracial. Nonetheless, my adoptive parents always went above and beyond to make me feel special and valued.
At one point, I was sexually abused. I struggled with not having all the answers to my questions about it, but it ultimately led to me being sexually active in my early teens. Eventually, I ended up pregnant at the age of 15. My unborn son’s father was shot and killed during the 5th month of pregnancy. I began writing to him in order to vent. After my son was born, I developed a new drive for life. I completed high school and went on to college.
During my second year of college, I gave my life to Christ. I always felt drawn toward God and a divine purpose, but it finally all came together in that moment. It was as if everything clicked and a light bulb came on. As I lived my new Christian life, I still struggled and made a lot of mistakes, but was always drawn back to God.
In 2011, I worked as a cake decorator at a local grocery store. My fellow co-worker asked if I’d be interested in meeting his friend so I agreed. That particular friend became my husband just months later. He had a daughter the same age as my son and we eventually had two more children together. We’ve been married for 5 years now.
In 2015, I found the letter I had written my son’s father and felt led to publish it and dedicate it to my son. I released the book on the 13th anniversary date of his father’s passing. A Changed Heart is available on Amazon.com and Barnesandnoble.com. I have shared my story on live radio and TV plus I also do some public speaking at various events (as does my husband). In addition to writing, I love drawing, fishing, watching old movies and spending quality time with my family.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask me. I’m pretty transparent and I don’t mind if things get deep. It’s all for God’s glory. : )
